Treatment guidelines for the investigation and treatment of PANDAS & PANS have now been published by the UK PANDAS & PANS physician network.
“PANDAS” is short for Paediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcus. This is a group of conditions which are poorly recognised in the UK, both by parents & professionals. They typically involve the development of tics, obsessive-compulsive disorder &/or eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa. This is secondary to a streptococcal infection and is the result of the body developing antibodies that stimulate a part of the brain. Sometimes the symptoms can be mistaken for autism.
